ACTIVITIES
MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Magoebaskloof area is fast becoming a mecca for mountain bikers. Various Mountain Biking events are hosted in the area and marked trails have been established by TMA. These link accommodation providers making them easily accessible. Permits are required to use these trails and are available at Cheerio Trout Lodge, and the Magoebaskloof Adventures. The cost is R40 per day and kids under 12 are free.

The Magoebaskloof Tourism Association in conjunction with various establishments have developed five mountain bike trails of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty. These trails can be accessed from the properties as indicated on the trail descriptions. The trails are well marked.

Please read and abide by The Rules of Use - these apply to all the routes.

Green Route. (Distance: 22km)

510m
This is the most challenging of the 3 routes with a good mix of climbing and fast flowing downhill sections, forestry roads as well as a fair amount of singletrack. It starts at the Coffee shop at Cheerio Gardens then goes through the amazing Wegraakbosch organic farm and dairy with a technical downhill singletrack through their indigenous forest. (Please remember to close the cattle gates.) From there you go through a section of the MagoebaskloofMTB XCO track before climbing the infamous Mount Merrick. From the summit at the Long Tom Monument there is a long flowing downhill section to the river before you follow it to Zwakala River Retreat and Zwakala Brewery. The last stretch back to Cheerio is uphill but worth it as you traverse the beautiful Sequoia Gardens, onto Cheerio Trout Fishing and Holiday Resort and finally back to Cheerio Gardens. (You will want to return to Zwakala afterwards for one of their award winning lagers!)

MagoebaskloofMTB XCO track (Distance: 6km)

160m
This is a Cross Country Track set out behind Stanfordlake College that also links the Blue, Green and Yellow routes. Just 6 km but technical and tough consisting of mostly single track some of which was built by the renowned Karkloof Trailbuilder Hilton Turvey. It is loads of fun and you will want to do it again and again!

The Blue Route (Distance: 9km)

181m
This is a short 10Km Route consisting of a good mix of Farm Roads and singletrack with spectacular scenery. It starts at the picturesque Mountain Cafe at Blueberry Heights . Go between the Blueberry and Kiwifruit orchards to the pallet bridge over the stream. Turn sharp left (do not go under the bridge, this is a link to the Green and Yellow Routes) . The short uphill singletrack through the pine is tough but ridable, then enjoy the flat fast section around Stanford Lake. Climb up towards the Stanford Lake Resort before Descending to Fish Eagle Dam. Cut through the pine forest on some single track, down to another pretty little dam then up through the pine before the long single track down to Ebenezer dam. Follow the flat fast waterboard road around the edge of the dam back to the Waterfall at Blueberry Heights.

The Yellow Route (Distance: 17km)

375m
This is the least technical route and links Haenertsburg to the beautiful Cheerio valley along the scenic Broederstroom River. It is a fairly flat and fast 17km suitable for beginners with mainly forestry roads and not too much singletrack. It starts at the Coffee shop at Cheerio Gardens and follows the Cheerio Road (L Road) towards R71. It then winds down through some beautiful indigenous forest at Glensheil Farm towards Haenertsburg. Just before town you make a sharp right at the old bridge and follow the Broederstroom River back to the Cheerio Valley. The climb out of the valley is fairly tough but worth it as you traverse the beautiful Sequoia Gardens, and then on to Cheerio Trout Fishing and Holiday Resort and finally back to Cheerio Gardens.
